Add this to the list of enduring human ironies. The world’s poor, who bear little responsibility for global warming on account of not being able to access electricity or internal combustion engines, will be most seriously affected by climate change.
And the negative impacts won’t be coming someday. Try Friday.
Turns out, the really bad things about climate change- crop failure, coastal flooding, violent storms- are here already.
Said Professor Martin Parry:
”We are all used to talking about these impacts coming in the lifetimes of our children and grandchildren. Now we know that it’s us.”
Awesome. What’s worse is that the impacts of global warming will hit the poorest people the hardest. Look out, Africa…we’ve been screwing you over for 400 years, and we’re about to do it again. Big time.
By 2020, up to 250 million Africans may be left chronically short of food and water. Moreover, the report also confirms that:
“Africa is one of the most vulnerable continents to climate variability and change because of multiple stresses and low adaptive capacity.”
So hang out tight, everyone. The line to get on the Climate Change Downward Spiral Ride turned out to be a lot shorter than everyone thought.
