Will they or won’t they? Satellite Shoot-Down Watch, Day One

Alternate post title: Nunc Scio gets missile fever!

sm3.jpg

As you have no doubt heard, there’s a giant (bus-sized, anyway) broken spy satellite that’s about to fall out of the sky. You may also have heard that the US Military is so going downtown on this mofo, and is totally going to shoot it down. As early as tonight, in fact. Read the rest of this entry »

Geez. You go away for the weekend, and the world gets all democratic

And we’re back. Had a great weekend in NYC with Team Polkaroo (long story), then a tragically bad eleven hours with US Airways. I’m no pilot, but I’m pretty sure Boston is not on the way to Buffalo, no matter how close they would be in an alphabetical listing of American cities.

Then I get back, open my Google Reader, and the world has gotten slightly more democratic. I mean, I’m sure something horrendous will happen in the next 48 hours to totally invalidate my optimism, but from here things look pretty good. Read the rest of this entry »

Low Blogging Advisory: New York Edition

All right, kids. No blogging until Tuesday, as I’ll be in NYC for another round of the LSE reunion tour. But make sure you come back next week. I’ll post something so shocking, so unbelievably, earth-shatteringly cool, it will change your life forever. Guaranteed!* And maybe I’ll put some pictures of my trip up or something.

*Not a guarantee.

Saudis to execute woman for ‘witchcraft’

And suddenly, just like that, it’s 1237AD.

That’s one hell of a legal system they have there. Nothing says ‘awesome’ like the capricious use of coercive power by corrupt officials beholden to a bloated monarchy.

Who needs a drink?

Indiana Jones IV teaser trailer, piratey fresh

Ah, those busy pirates. Making their illegal cell-phone videos and intrepidly working to bring us this little gem:

I’m not too proud to admit this gave me goosebumps. I’m starting to believe that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull will be good. Maybe not Raiders of the Lost Ark good, but definitely Last Crusade good.

And of course, since it’s been 19 years since the last one, KOTCS will look CGI-tastic is ways previous Indys never could. Let’s just hope Spielberg was able to rein in George “Story? What Story? Explosions!” Lucas long enough to put together a good story. H/T to MN for this one.

[UPDATE] If you’re into things like ‘sound’ and ‘picture quality’, here’s the official trailer too:

New post over at blogTO

I just posted an article about the financial problems at the Canadian Stage Company. The upshot is that to survive in Toronto theatre, you need to have a pretty clear idea of what you’re about. At the moment, CanStage seems a little confused.

Here’s a snippit:

CanStage’s 2007-08 season seemed calculated to appeal to the widest possible audience and take a stab at Mirvish Production‘s dominance of the ‘big show’ market. And if there’s anything close to an inviolable law in Toronto theatre, it’s this: you can’t out-Mirvish Mirvish. Even Mirvish can’t out-Mirvish Mirvish, as demonstrated by a spate of ambitious but flawed projects. Lord of the Rings. The Musical. That’s all I’m saying.

Anyways, check it out if you get a chance.

Helicopter spy video of new Trek film

So apparently, some random news crew flew over some location shooting for JJ Abrams’ new Star Trek movie. Here’s the footage:

Looks like the new film takes place on a glacier. Cool. Very Star Trek VI.

Also, I would’ve thought JJ Abrams would have some sort of missile defense shield over his projects. Not to put too fine a point on it, but may I suggest the SLAMRAAM? Via io9.
