strange days
Woman dies in front of TV set. And nobody finds her. FOR 42 YEARS.

I’m saying there’s about a 50/50 chance that this is real. And if it is, this is the weirdest thing I’ve seen for a while.

Sometime in 1966, a woman in Zagreb, Croatia sat down in front of the television with a cup of tea. Sadly, she died. And for some incomprehensible reason, her body was only found this week- 42 years later- when police barged in to see if anyone actually lived in the apartment. Said a police spokesman:

“So far, we have no idea how it is possible that someone officially reported missing so long ago was not found before in the same apartment she used to live in. When officers went there, they said it was like stepping into a place frozen in time. The cup she had been drinking tea from was still on a table next to the chair she had been sitting in and the house was full of things no one had seen for decades. Nothing had been disturbed for decades, even though there were more than a few cobwebs in there.”

I bet. Do they not have landlords in Croatia? And are vacancy rates so high that no one ever bothered to check a supposedly empty apartment? Totally bizarre. Like I say, I’m not convinced this is real. But if it is…welcome to Crazytown.

To boldly go where now man has (legally) gone before

Here’s a Nunc Scio hat-tip to Star Trek actor George Takei and his partner, Brad Altman, for being the first gay couple to receive their marriage license in West Hollywood. Here’s a video of the pair (at about 2:40, complete with shirtless Sulu sword action):

On Monday, California became the second state in the USA to allow gay marriage. Good news for fans of personal liberty, and, as it turns out, Star Trek. Good work, Mr. Sulu. I wish you all the best.

Dino-palooza in Utah

It’s a good time to be a paleontologist in Utah.

Scientists there have uncovered a treasure-trove of fossilized trees and dinos. From National Geographic:

n just three weeks of work on federal land near Hanksville, Utah, paleontologists say they unearthed at least two meat-eating dinosaurs, a probable Stegosaurus, and four sauropods—long necked, long-tailed plant-eaters that could reach 130 feet (40 meters) long, making them the largest animals ever to have walked the Earth.

“So far [the paleontologists] have found not only scattered bones but partial and complete skeletons. It’s really amazing,” said Scott Foss, a paleontologist in the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM’s) Salt Lake City office.

It’s pretty rare to find these kinds of ‘big sexy dinosaurs’ (no fooling- that’s what paleontologists call them), particularly as intact skeletons. It may be a recession everywhere else, but it’s boom-time for the dino crowd.
