I seem to say this every few months or so, but the Westboro Baptist Church has hit a new low.
This ‘church’ and it’s lunatic leader, ‘Pastor’ Fred Phelps, likes to protest at funerals. Like Mathew Shepard‘s funeral, after he was brutally murdered by homophobes. And like the funerals of US servicemen killed in Iraq, ostensibly as punishment for contravening God’s law. The logic of these protests, if you can call it that, boils down to the group’s slogan: “god hates fags”. Yes, everyone who dies for any reason in a given place or country is God’s terrible vengeance for our sinful ways.
Taking this principle to its most insane extremity, members of the ‘church’ will picket the funeral of Tim Maclean Jr., the young man savagely murdered on a Greyhound Bus last week. The reason? They’d like to explain to us that his death is God’s way of saying we shouldn’t allow gay marriage. Defending this bold foray into madness, a ‘church’ spokesperson has this to say:
“We’re trying to get you to see that your rebellion against the standards of God, your disobedience to the commandments – your idols, your false gods, your filthy ways have brought wrath upon your head.”
Now, the dialect is a little tricky here, but it basically translates as:
“Crazy. Crazy. Crazy crazy crazy. Crazy. Craaaazy. I’m a crazy idiot, not to mention a heartless jackass whose soul is as black as the darkest hole you could ever imagine.”
If this really is god’s wrath at work, this leads to two inevitable conclusions. First, God is a jerk. Second, he is really, really abstract. I’ve got to think there are better ways to make your point than kill some poor kid on a bus, then rely on a bunch of inbred troglodytes to explain it to us. Like, oh I don’t know, obliterate the House of Commons with a meteor. I mean, it’s freakin God. If he really is omnipotent, you’d think he could be a little more direct.
But hey, nothing beats ignorance and hate masquerading as religion. If you’d like to point out to the Westboro morons what you think about them, you can head on down to the Cameron House, 408 Queen St. West, tonight at about 7PM. They’ll be protesting a new play that satirizes Fred Phelps, part of the Summerworks Festival (no fooling). Come prepared to heckle.
Word can not even explain how horrified am I by these people. Can Canada Customs not deny them entrace to the country?
Entering with the intent of spreading hate seems like a good enough reason to deny entry.
Wait…was the kid gay? How did they make this link, other than it’s a very public murder? Now clearly, logic doesn’t play any part in their behaviour, but still, are there details that I’m ignorant of here?
While I obviously completely agree with this post and your stance on the Westboro Baptist Church in general, I have to question your use of quotation marks on the words pastor and church.
They’re a (crazy, cult-like) church and he’s their (psycho moronic) pastor.
I find this story, as well as the one on CTV.CA VERY disturbing. These people have no right making comments and accusations like this. I absolutely disgusted and horrified and ashamed to know people like this actually exist in this world. People like them ARE THE REASON for war and all the other problems in the world. Their ignorance is mind-blowing.
Saying that 22 year old young man DESERVED to be brutally attacked on the Greyhound bus? That’s just sick. If anyone deserves it, the moron who runs that place is the one.
GM, Tim was not gay he was on his way home to his wife and child when this happend He was a kind soul who would give his right hand for any no matter if he knew you or not.
SassAfrass, As much as I would love for these people to be refused at our boarder it won’t happen but is should. the most they can do is hold them up but we have to prove what they are hear for. As much as that sucks I wish we could keep them out.
I personally would never wish such on others but I hope that when some dies in their church that real people like us protest their funral and invade their privacy just like they are doing to other. But I also beleive that Karma is a bi#$@h and it will come back to haunt those who deserve it. Just wish I could be there when their’s comes.

That church needs to f*** off!!!! What they want to do to that poor family is unspeakable. Then to start in on Canadians… do they not know who we are or what we stand for! So if your part of that church and your reading this… Canada doesn’t want you here. You are not welcome!!! So go to your own country and let them hate you. You don’t want to feel our hate towards you cause its like a burning hell.

Hope there are enough people in “peg” with the cojones to deal with this garbage, I wonder if they would have the guts to picket a Mob funeral, or one for the “Angels” I hope they get everything coming to them, and in Spades. I’d kill them myself, but I live in Australia. Shame they didnt come to torment Heath Ledgers funeral…I was really disapointed, I even had my Kick-boxing crew of about 700 on the standby, and I even was about to contact the bikie gangs to get them to help as well…They really wanted to protect Heath’s memory by offing these phelp whelps and the cowards didnt even turn up!

I just read more on the coward Fred Phelps and his followers he only gets .01 per cent of his emails this is what it says:”oh, and pastor phelps dosen’t do emails. if we think that your message is unique or interesting enough to pass on to him, he will get it”. I am so disgusted by the behavior of the Westboro church members. As a Christian, I can tell everybody who will read this that the attitude and behavior of this “cult-like” group does not exemplify what a real Christian’s reaction should be toward this poor family who has suffered such a tragic loss. A true Christian would NOT say or exhibit any of the “garbage” that the Westboro people have said. Please don’t label “Christians” as all radical crazy people. I am deeply saddened for Tim McLean’s parents and family, and I pray for God to comfort them and help them. God doesn’t hate anyone or anybody, God hates sin and that’s what he sent his Son Jesus Christ for, Jesus died for all the sins of the world.
