Your bloody demise…in Norwegian!

There are some themes so universal, so central to the human experience, that they transcend the barriers of language. Love, hate, childhood…and, Nazi Zombies.

Because what’s worse than Nazis who are also zombies? This timeless story is brought to you by the Norwegian horror flick “Død Snø” (Dead Snow), a title that is fun because I get to use “ø”. So what if you can’t understand the actors? NAZI ZOMBIES.

The Credit MacDaddy pushes limits of sanity, finance

Never, under any cicumstance, for any reason, borrow money from this man:

This turtle is awesome

Sorry ’bout the lack of blogging today, folks. Turns out I have a job or something.

But in lieu of my normal sparkling insight (?), here’s a turtle with a mohawk.

Just because you’re a reptile, doesn’t mean you can’t be punk.

Theatre Review: The Crackwalker

This entry is cross-posted with blogTO.

When it first premiered at Theatre Passe Muraille 28 years ago, Judith Thompson’s The Crackwalker was a kind of lighning rod for Canadian drama. Not only did it mark the arrival of a major new theatrical voice, but it signalled a new maturity among Canadian playwrights. Grit and brutal honesty had arrived.

Staged and Confused’s production of The Crackwalker, also at Theatre Passe Muraille, is a worthy tribute to the significance of that first production. But it fails to generate any relevance of its own or achieve the resonance of its forebearer. Legacy, as it turns out, can be a tricky burden to bear. Read the rest of this entry »

Fox News is maaaad at Canada

Sometimes it feels like our neighbour to the south never notice us up here in Canuckistan. But if say a VP candidate looks like a porn star, as the CBC’s Heather Mallick did, Fox News will start paying all kinds of attention.

Observe:

Oh man. Sure, Mallick’s article is over-the-top and touch beyond the pale. But watching the anchor lose her mind over the article is all kinds of entertaining. Also fun: misnaming the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (Company), repeating “it’s taxpayer funded!” like some bizarre mantra, and the fact that Fox thinks this is a story at all. A lot of Canadians don’t like Republicans? Scandal! Send in the tanks!

Speak out on the culture cuts

The nice thing about being an artist looking down the barrel of $60 million in arts cuts is you usually have the tools to say something about it.

And, if you have something to say about the Harper government’s cuts to culture, the nice folks at the Department of Culture (not a government department, just a cheeky name) have provided a handy outlet. They’ve launched Gone in 30 Seconds, a video contest looking for the best and most creative rant on the Conservative’s culture cuts.

Write a song, a film, a multimedia art piece…anything you like. Just make sure your voice is heard.
