Don LaFontaine, 1940-2008

Not many people know Dan LaFontaine‘s name. But they sure knew his voice. The ‘voiceover king’ lent his dulcet tones to literally thousands of commercials and movie trailers. His signature line, ”In a world where…” is now a cliche, but one born of LaFontaine’s immense body of work. Based on contracts signed, he was the single busiest actor in SAG history.

LaFontaine passed away yesterday in Los Angleles. While the world may not notice his absence directly, we are now without an omnipresent, and dare I say, comforting piece of our aural background.

Farewell, Mr. LaFontaine. You will be missed.

American election watch: September 2, 2008

In honour of what promises to be the craziest most memorable American elections in recent history (as compared to the upcoming Canadian snooze-fest), Nunc Scio will be providing daily (give or take) roundups of American election news. So without further adieu…

Tuesday morning brings a whole bunch of bad news for John McCain:

First, Obama’s acceptance speech at the DNC convention garnered 34.8 million viewers. That’s more viewers than the opening ceremonies of the Beijing Olympics, the American Idol finale, and the Oscars. Holy entertaining politics, Batman!
McCain’s choice for VP- Alaskan Sarah Palin- is rasing more than a few eyebrows. First, there’s her pregnant, unamarried daughter. Then there’s an ongoing ethics investigation into her involvement with the firing of a State Trooper, who also happens to be an ex-brother-in-law. And finally, the Guardian is reporting she used to be a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group dedicated to separating Alaska from the United States. Leaving aside the sheer insanity of an Alaskan independence movement, this doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence in Palin’s committment to the country she ostensibly wants to lead.
As if all that wasn’t bad enought, it looks like the band Van Halen is none-too-pleased with their song “Right Now” being used by the McCain Campaign. Without permission. And even if the Republicans had asked, Eddie and Co. would have declined. Disturbing news, as this means not all senior citizens, in fact, like McCain. This also harkens back to Ronald Reagan’s use of “Born in the USA” as a campaign tune. Except Springsteen still makes good music, and Sammy Hagar suuuuucks.

So there you go. Seems McCain is on a bit of a downward spiral. I’m sure he’ll respond by doing something surprising, like naming a Cocker Spaniel as his Secretary of State.
