Bruce Dickinson to the rescue!

In addition to being the kick-ass lead singer for a kick-ass band, Iron Maiden frontman Bruce Dickinson is also a certified airline pilot. He flies Boeing 757s for charter company Astraeus, and also flies his bandmates around in a custom-painted jet. And last week, when airline XL went bust stranding thousands of passengers, Dickinson flew 200 of them home. And he was on vacation!

This isn’t the first time the singer has lent a helping hand. In the summer of 2006, he flew 200 UK citizens out of Lebandon during the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict.

Besides being an awesome story, Dickinson’s aerial exploits afford a rare opportunity to construct a descriptive sentence using Iron Maiden song titles. S0, <ahem>, here goes:

Heaven Can Wait…it’s Aces High and no Flight of Icarus when The Trooper Bruce Dickinson flies over a Sea of Madness to rescue victims of Fallen Angel XL’s collapse. Bring Your Daughter…to the Slaughter!

Not bad for a first attempt.

Church of England apologizes to Darwin

As the rational world gears up to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth (February 12, 2009…mark your calendars now!), the Church of England is apologizing to the storied naturalist for gettin’ all up in his grill about evolution.

The apology, to be published on a C of E website that actually promotes Darwin’s theories, reads as follows:

200 years from your birth, the Church of England owes you an apology for misunderstanding you and, by getting our first reaction wrong, encouraging others to misunderstand you still. We try to practise the old virtues of ‘faith seeking understanding’ and hope that makes some amends.

Nice to see that, in this age of Sarah Palin’s and assorted other religious nutbunnies cluttering up our public lives, at least one church has decided to live in the 21st century with the rest of us. Of course, this is all cold comfort to Darwin, because, you know, he’s totally dead. Ah, well. Better late than never.
