Mac vs. PC….dancefight!

If, after dancing it out and messily dismembering one another as in this West Side Story/Evil Dead homage, PC and Mac fans can still come together, then there is hope for Conservatives and Liberals, Republicans and Democrats still.

Awesome. I love me some dancefighting. Thanks to RS for the tweet.

And then, the American election got weird

I’m all for innovative political protest, but this strikes me as a bit beyond the pale:

A dead bear cub draped in Barack Obama posters has been found at the entrance to a university in North Carolina, police said today. Police and wildlife officials are investigating the incident at the Western Carolina University.

Maintenance workers found the 34kg (75lb) bear cub in front of the administration building at the entrance to the campus.

It had been shot, and Obama posters were stapled together and placed over its head.

Awful. But with this act of cruelty, the ursucide made an unintentionally salient point: when a political system veers into intractable partisan insanity, only the innocent- workers, middle class families, the thoughtful and intellectually curious, and, apparently, bears- suffer.

Family Guy slams McCain-Palin

Family Guy is not a program know for its subtlety. But they hit a new high last night with a surprisingly bold attack on the McCain-Palin ticket.

In the episode, Brian, Stewie and Mort accidentally travel back in time to WWII. To escape, they have to steal the uniforms of several passing Nazis. Here’s the ensuing clip:

Ouch.

UPDATE: Copyright police got to the clip above. Here’s another, poorer quality version.

Tomb of real-life ‘Gladiator’ found

The final resting place of Marcus Nonius Macrinus, inspiration for Russell Crowe’s Maximus Decimus Meridius in the movie Gladiator, has been found in Rome. While Macrinus was a successful general and confidante of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, fans of the film will be disappointed to note that he, unlike his cinematic progeny, was not sold into slavery and spent relatively little time kicking ass.

Nevertheless, this is interesting because Gladiator is pretty much my favourite movie. Ever. Sure, you can criticize it for being mindlessly macho, self-indulgent and a complete bastardization of history. But then, you’d be listing all the reasons I love it. Lines like “Death smiles at us all. All we can do is smile back.” may seem trite, but they have more or less formed the borders of my moral universe since I saw Gladiator in 2000.

So, nifty that they found the real fellow’s tomb. If they unearth the sarcophogus, here’s hoping it’s inscribed with all kinds of badass quotes. Like, “What we do in life echoes in enternity.” Goddamn right it does!

Are you not entertained? Are you not entertained?

Harper’s ordinary artists

Since I was mercifully out of the country for the majority of the election, I missed most of the cauterwailing and backbiting that seems to characterize a lot of Canadian politics these days. But I also missed this genius video, by frequent Nunc Scio commentator The Forbes. Be warned: it is slightly NSFW and features brief, skinny nudity.

Mmmm. Tasty satire.

And we’re back

Vacation is over, jetlag waning, and Nunc Scio is ready to rock and roll yet again.

Barcelona was awesome…great town, great food, and great history (if you dig George Orwell, there are all sorts of fun tidbits scattered around). I’ll try to get something a bit more concrete about the trip up on the weekend after I sort through my photos. In the meantime: I recommend it. All the culture and fun of Paris with a kickin’ Mediterreanean climate. Yes please.

I’m sorting through a backlog of work and email at the moment, so it may take me a while to post anything too flashy. But hang in there. The wheels are turning.

Low blogging advisory: Spanish edition

I’m off to Barcelone today, so there will be precious little blogging here at Nunc Scio until Oct. 15. If I find an Internet cafe somewhere, I will try to flash a quick update. But in the meantime, thanks for your patience.
See you back here on the 15th.
