Women journalists under gun in Afghanistan

Horrifying news out of Afghanistan today- two woman journalists have been shot dead over the past week. One of the victims, a schoolteacher who operated the local chapter of 'Radio Peace', was killed as she slept with he 8 month old son. This story makes two urgent points. First,  the fundamentalist strain in Afghanistan is far from defeated. It continues to destroy lives, families and futures.

Second, it is more important than ever that governments- and the the multinational forces that support them- must take steps to protect journalists, women or otherwise. Local citizen reporters are building the fabric of democracy in Iraq and Afghanistan, precisely why they are being targeted by reactionary elements.
