The BSG remake we narrowly escaped

Last week, I wrote about the sheer idiocy of re-re-making Battlestar Galactica based on the original 1970s TV show. It would be an unnecessary, cheese-filled debacle, I said. And now, awesome sci-fi blog io9 has proved the point for me. They've dredged up a "trailer" for a proposed late-1990's remake called Battlestar Galactica: Second Coming. The project was led by Richard Hatch, who played Apollo in the original show (and Tom Zarek on the remake). Here's what he came up with:

I'll grant that, if this show had ever gone into production, the special effects would have been slightly better than the budget CGI demonstrated in the clip. But the actual quality of the concept speaks for itself. A sequel or faithful remake would have been little more than a poor man's Star Wars, instead of the fascinating political and social thriller created by Ron D. Moore.

I'm forced to conclude a movie based on the original BSG would fare little better. BSG has been remade, folks. Competently, enjoyably and, dare I say it, definitively.
